Like a lot of sunny Mediterranean destinations, the nightlife in Athens goes late and is, of course, a load of fun. From what I could tell during my recent visit to the Greek capital, Athenians are as friendly as anyone and love a sociable drink as much as they love showing visitors how awesome their city is. When you go, consider bending an elbow at one of these fine watering holes.
Drunk Sinatra
16 Thiseos, 10562
Hands down Drunk Sinatra is one of the greatest names for a bar EVER! This cavernous drinking establishment with a retro feel and a good amount of outdoor space seemed to be the place to be the night I visited. Go for the drinks plus the smiling faces, dancing in the corridors and a very chilled out attitude. They do burgers too. The bar has its own website at drunksinatra.gr, but non Greek speakers might find its Facebook page a little easier to navigate: facebook.com/drunk.sinatra.bistro
The Dude Bar
14 Kalamiotou, 10560 Athens, Greece
Looking for a laid back joint where you can enjoy a White Russian? Dude, this is the place. I loved this bar. An excellent DJ was there on my visit sharing an enviable collection of vinyl featuring everything from mid 80s Cure to early 60s soul…and a whole lot of punk rock in between. Find the Dude on Facebook at facebook.com/theDUDEbar.
Explorers Lounge
Mezzanine floor of the NJV Athens Plaza Hotel
2 Leoforos Vasileos Georgiou at Syntagma (Constitution Square), 10564
Located inside the amazingly placed NJV Athens Plaza hotel near Constitution Square and with views of the Agora, this bar’s a little more “grown up” and “old school” than the three others listed. Looking for a plush green leather Chesterfield to sink into when enjoying your tipple? Then here is where you want to drink. For details go to njvathensplaza.gr/en/athens-explorer-lounge.
Six d.o.g.s
6-8 Avramiotou, 10551
Probably Athens’ most popular place to meet up with friends and maybe catch some live music, the canopied and mostly outdoor Six D.O.G.S is an ace place for a drink. If it’s any indication of what Six Dogs is like, indie rock band Of Montreal was slated to play there soon after I’d paid my visit. Oh well. More at sixdogs.gr.
