2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the tiny city-state of Singapore becoming an independent republic. To celebrate its Golden Jubilee, a range of activities is in the works. Here’s a look at some of the biggest and most anticipated.

Chingay

Held during Chinese New Year celebrations, this lively and loud multicultural parade has its roots in customs to drive away evil spirits with firecrackers and today brings with it the promise of Singapore’s best partying.

SEA Games

In June, Singapore will be the host of the 28th edition of the Southeast Asian Games. This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Extraordinary”.

Dragon Boat Festival

Singapore’s annual Dragon Boat Festival in mid June is a fantastic time to admire the sportsmanship and physical endurance exhibited during the grueling dragon boat races with indulging in the delicious traditional of eating dumplings.

The opening of the National Gallery

This new visual arts institution housed in the former City Hall and Supreme Court buildings will open its doors in October to share its large collection of visual arts from Southeast Asia and Singapore dating from the 19th century to the present day with the public.

National Day

National Day is the 9th of August. And with this one marking 50 years as an independent nation, you can best believe it’s going to be a huge party with a major parade, fireworks and all sorts of event geared for everyone who loves to have a good time.

Grand Prix

One of the hottest Formula 1 events of the year, the Grand Prix will return to Singapore in September for its spectacular night race.

Jubilee Walk

The new Jubilee Walk walking trail with pedestrian bridge stretching from Merlion Park to Marina Promenade will be launched in November with spaces along the trail for public events and performances.
ASEAN Para Games

December 3rd to the 9th will see this biannual sporting event with 11 Southeast Asian nations participating with competing athletes who with physical challenges such as mobility and visual disabilities or are amputees or have cerebral palsy.
