Museums for Cultured Kids in Minneapolis

I was born and raised in a suburb of Minneapolis, but I’ve lived all over the country (and in Europe). I always said that if I had kids, I would definitely move back home. Well, I made good on my promise (both the having kids and the moving back home parts) and I couldn’t be happier. Not only does Minneapolis have incredible museums, they are also kid-friendly. Here are my three top Minneapolis Museums to take your cultured kids:

Minneapolis Institute of Arts

The MIA houses an impressive collection of visual arts that span the globe and the centuries. Kids will especially love wandering through the large Asian collection (including recreated rooms), the American Indian textiles and jewelry collection, and the African collection (featuring large ceremonial masks). Twelve Sundays a year, the MIA hosts Target Family Days, which feature music and dance performances, artist demonstrations, gallery activities, and hands-on art activities for the whole family.

Walker Art Center
1750 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, Minnesota 55403
The Walker, one of the world’s premier contemporary art centers, is located in downtown Minneapolis. In addition to its extensive permanent collection and touring exhibitions, the Walker hosts lectures, performing arts and film series throughout the year. The open-air sculpture garden across the street is free and open to the public. Kids will love the art projects and special kid-oriented tours on the first Saturday of each month.

Mill City Museum
704 South 2nd St., Minneapolis, MN 55401
Located in a renovated mill on the Mississippi Riverfront, the Mill City Museum is operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. This interactive history museum is sure to please kids of all ages. Your visit will take you through the history of Minneapolis’ flour milling culture. In the summer, Mill City hosts a concert series (some of them geared toward children) in its ruggedly beautiful inner courtyard.
