American Airlines has filed an application with the Department of Transportation to add 10 more flights between Miami and Brazil.
The request is part of the airline’s phase-in process for the Open Skies Agreement signed by US President Barack Obama during his visit to Brazil in March.
Under that agreement, US carriers will be able to bypass the DOT and fill slots in Brazil as they become available, but not until 2015.
“Leading up to Open Skies, a large number of additional weekly frequencies are being phased in,’’ said Martha Pantin, an American spokeswoman.
The airline wishes to increase flights on both of the existing Miami–Brasilia and Miami–Belo Horizonte routes from four times per week to daily. If approved, new service between Miami and Manaus would also begin four times per week on June 14, 2012.
