Statue of Liberty Postage Stamp Actually Highlights Las Vegas Replica

This blog post was updated on October 25, 2018.

The United States Postal Service admitted a mix-up over a postage stamp commemorating the Statue of Liberty.

The problem? The stamp doesn’t actually feature the famous Lady Liberty in New York Harbor. Instead, the stamp features a half-size replica standing in front of the New York-New York Hotel in Las Vegas.

The first-class stamp was issued back in December to celebrate the “world-recognized” symbol of the United States, according to an announcement from the USPS.

The error went unnoticed until a collector brought it to the attention of the postal service last month.

Over 3 billion stamps had already been printed by then and the organization says it will just have to live with the error. No recalls are planned for the stamps. Instead, the office will correct the catalogue information to reflect the stamp’s true nature.
