The Metropolitan Transportation Association (MTA) in New York City has unveiled the first of several planned high-tech, touch screen “On the Go! Travel Stations” in Lower Manhattan.
The machines, which resemble over-sized iPads, are actually 47-inch touch-screen tablets which offer real-time updates on planned and un-planned service changes throughout the system.
Users will be able to find the best routes to their destination both underground and above through a series of interactive maps of subway lines and surrounding neighborhoods.
The first kiosk can be found at the Bowling Green subway station in Lower Manhattan with plans for four more to be installed at Penn Station, Grand Central Station, Atlantic Ave.-Pacific St. in downtown Brooklyn, and Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave. in Queens over the coming weeks.
The initial machines are being paid for by tech giant Cisco during a six-month pilot program. However, if all goes according to plan, the MTA is likely to expand the technology system-wide in the near future.
