Love is a popular topic during the month of February, which probably has a little something to do with Valentine’s Day.
For several weeks, we have been putting together lists of romantic restaurants, divine chocolate dessert ideas and other tips for creating the perfect night with your loved one.
This post is more about the places around the world that just scream love and romance. From candlelit dinners along a waterfront in Italy to watching the sun rise over the Saharan sand dunes, love and travel go together like peanut butter and jelly, or perhaps like Lady and Tramp.
Verona, Italy – Juliet’s House: Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was based in the northern Italian city of Verona — a place where I also spent a semester of my university years trying to get to know the Romance language better. Even though the story isn’t necessarily true, Verona has set up a statue of Juliet, next to a balcony on a house that has been called hers as well. For good luck and love, you can rub Juliet’s shiny right breast, but my favorite part of the experience is reading the love notes and messages left on Juliet’s Wall.
Paris, France – I Love You Wall: The I Love You Wall is located in Paris’ Jehan-Rictus Square and features the words “I love you” in 311 different languages. It spans an area of 416 square feet, making it a massive monument to the topic at hand. If you’re lucky enough to score cheap flights to Paris in February, this is the perfect location to take your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day (or any day!).
Jeju Island, South Korea – Love Land: On Jeju Island in South Korea lies a park full of statues. To be more specific, these statues all depict love, sex, and eroticism (you should be 18 years old to visit). There are even some interactive statues that let you turn a crank to see it in motion. In all, 140 statues adorn the park, some in the positions of the Kama Sutra — those of which can be viewed in about an hour’s time. Definitely a place that screams “love”, don’t you think?
While these certain destinations have reasons to make them inspire love in the loudest of all ways, sometimes a destination can be romantic just by being there with your special someone. If you can’t make it all the way to Italy or Paris, for example, think about a quick weekend away in a nice, cozy hotel.
