Li Jiaxing, the administrator of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, recently announced an ambitious plan to tackle China’s continuing travel boom.
According to Li, Beijing will fund a 1.5 trillion yuan ($230 billion US) project that will add 45 new airports across the country within the next five years.
China’s quickly-expanding travel market is expected to overtake North America as the world’s largest in the coming decades.
While Li did not say where the new airport will be built, many expect new hubs to pop up in poorer areas of Western China, providing links to booming cities in the East.
