Mexico City is one of the most fascinating places I’ve visited, in large part because of its thriving art scene that is at once rooted in history and constantly changing. Whether you’re in the mood to browse or to buy, here are three spots that art lovers should definitely check out.

Fundacíon Jumex Arte Contemporáneo/Museo Jumex
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra 303, Ampliacion Granada, 11529 Mexico City
Founded by Eugenio López Alonso, heir to the Grupo Jumex fruit juice empire, Museo Jumex houses the company’s vast contemporary art collection. The collection is considered by many to be one of the best in Latin America, and contains pieces by Jeff Koons, Andreas Gursky, Tacita Dean and Gabriel Orozco. Museo Jumex opened in 2013 with the goal of promoting contemporary art access and education. Check the website to see which exhibitions and events will be happening when you are in town.

Located in the Roma district (the leading arts area) off the Plaza de Río de Janeiro, Galería OMR represents both emerging and established contemporary artists, and has been a pioneering force in the avant-garde art scene in Mexico City. OMR recently opened a shop where art aficionados can purchase artist editions, design pieces and more. When you’re done at OMR, stroll around the Roma district a bit to discover other artistic gems.

Zócalo (Plaza de la Constitución)/Palacio Nacional

Step back in time as you visit Plaza de la Constitución (also referred to as Zócalo) in the Centro Histórico district (Mexico City’s original center). This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the largest plazas in the world, and is surrounded by a variety of gorgeous historic buildings. One of these is the Palacio Nacional, which houses murals by famed Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
