A company based in Geneva has created a program that will allow airport officials to track the movements of passengers carrying Wi-Fi enabled devices.
SITA, the company behind the new software, will implement the technology at Copenhagen International Airport in the coming weeks.
Airport officials are hoping the software will allow them to better understand the flow of passenger traffic throughout the hub.
The new information could lead to changes in airport design and optimize security checkpoints.
The program could prove quite useful for passengers as well.
A related iPhone app will allow travelers to check for the shortest security lines and will even provide coupon offers to stores and eateries close by. SITA says that 100,000 people have already downloaded the Copenhagen app.
According to analysts, about 20 percent of air travelers currently carry Wi-Fi emitting devices in airports. However, that number that continues to grow quickly with the increasing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers.
