Spain Airport Strikes Diverted After Preliminary Agreement

This blog post was updated on April 19, 2022.

The threat of nationwide strikes in Spain could be just about over.

Following 20 hours of negotiations, AENA, the country’s airport authority, reached a preliminary agreement with union leaders that would divert any strike actions this spring and summer.

Several unions had previously threatened to strike for 22 days during Spain’s busiest tourism season after an announced plan to privatize the nation’s air travel industry.

The new agreement still needs to pass union-wide votes but Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said he expects airports in Spain to be running at normal capacity for the Easter holidays and into the summer.
