A newly opened exhibition at London’s Somerset House offers a sweeping overview of the rich genre that is 21st century landscape photography. Landmark: the Fields of Photography is the first of its kind anywhere to show both the harsh and sometimes brutal realities of our rapidly changing environment alongside the natural world’s more enduring and stunning beauty.
The exhibition displays works by more than 70 photographers from North and South America, Africa, Europe and Asia and features over 170 works – many of which are previously unseen or recently completed – by photographers employing a range of technologies from 19th Century plate-camera techniques to the use of planes, drones, robots and satellites.
Many of the major names of contemporary photography are included in the show, such as Edward Burtynsky, Mitch Epstein, Nadav Kandar, Robert Adams, Simon Norfolk, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Lee Friedlander, Simon Roberts, Toshio Shibata, Robert Polidori along with pieces by a younger generation of photographers such as Pieter Hugo, Susan Evans, Raphael Dallaporta, Penelope Umbrico, Mathieu Bernard-Reymond, and others.
Landmark: the Fields of Photography represents the second exhibition to be presented by the Positive View Foundation. Founded in 2011 and launched in April of last year, the Positive View Foundation stages exhibitions of works and international photographers of the highest calibre while granting the profits from these events to organisations that establish photography projects as part of educational and training programmes for disadvantaged young people.
Says Andrew Page, Founder and CEO of Positive View Foundation, about the show and the foundation’s relationship with Somerset House:
We are thrilled to be returning to Somerset House for this, our second major exhibition after the amazing success that the recent show, Cartier-Bresson: A Question of Colour, proved to be. Working closely with [curator] William A. Ewing, we have collated the greatest contemporary landscape artists on the planet and we look forward to welcoming the public to experience the exhibition. ‘Landmark: the Fields of Photography’ promises to be the most innovative and ambitious exhibition on the theme of landscape for many years.”
Landmark: the Fields of Photography runs until the 28th of April 2013 at Somerset House, located at The Strand, WC2R 1LA. Admission is free. Visit somersethouse.org.uk for more information. For more about the Positive View Foundation visit positiveviewfoundation.org.uk.
