The Indonesian government says it is looking into building a new airport in Jakarta to keep up with current passenger growth.

The capital’s main airport, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, serves about 35 million passengers each year, a number that is growing 15 to 20 percent annually.

While officials say they are looking to expand Soekarno-Hatta International, a new airport remains a real possibility.

“We plan for multiple airports in the Jakarta metropolitan area,” said director general for airport transit Herry Bakti in a recent interview with the Jakarta Globe.

The Indonesian government has asked the Japan International Cooperation Agency to conduct a study looking into the expansion of the main airport as well as the development of new air facilities in Jakarta.

Indonesia signed a deal with the Japanese government last month that will allow Japan to fund transport projects around Jakarta worth 2 trillion yen.
