There are few places as lovely as the Great Lakes during the summer months. There are many places to vacation along the shores of Lake Michigan, but none quite as charming as Lakeside. Located just west of Interstate 94, Lakeside is easily accessible via car (or take a plane into Chicago and drive from there). Here are suggestions for places to stay, shop and eat during your visit.
Stay
Lakeside Inn
15251 Lakeshore Rd, Lakeside, MI 49116
The historic Lakeside Inn dates back to the 1880s and is a lovely place to spend a weekend. Grab a rocking chair on the 100-foot porch facing Lake Michigan or snuggle up next to the stone fireplace in the lobby and linger there a while before settling into your charming, comfortable room for the evening. The Lakeside Inn also has a great restaurant if you want to dine in.
Shop

AP is an impeccably curated boutique that specializes in handmade jewelry and textiles. AP’s collection focuses on indigenous textiles and craft made by artisans from all over the world. Each summer, AP also features small, exclusive collections from contemporary designers. The inventory changes continuously, and is always incredibly tempting. AP is owned by Ariane Prewitt, professor of fashion studies at Columbia College in Chicago. If you’re in Lakeside between Memorial Day and Labor Day, by sure to stop by this captivating boutique – you’ll be glad you did.
Eat

Union Pier, MI 49129
This delightful café and bakery has been serving up fresh, homemade goodness for breakfast, lunch, and dinner since 1995. The delicious menu rotates seasonally, and the friendly staff and cheerful dining area are the icing on the cake.
Pleasant House
9 North Elm Street, Three Oaks, MI 49128
Located in adjacent Three Oaks, Pleasant House restaurant and microbrewery opened in 2013. Pleasant House is known for its “Royal Pies,” their interpretation of British savory pies (and very positively reviewed by Bon Appétit magazine). The clean, bright interior, excellent pints, and hearty cuisine make for a winning combination.
