Five Useful iPhone Apps for Globetrotters

This blog post was updated on July 26, 2021.

True confession: my iPhone is pretty much glued to my hand. However, when I travel this is not necessarily a bad thing, since there are so many great iPhone travel apps to help get the most out of a trip (and they are much lighter than hauling around a guidebook!). I typically research and download them while I’m planning my trip, or sometimes while I’m waiting for my flight, and explore them before I hit the road so I know how to use the best app to benefit me the most by the time my plane touches down at my destination. Here are five iPhone apps for travel that I have found to be particularly useful or interesting.

TripIt
TripIt allows travelers to create an itinerary and import reservations for air travel, hotels and other aspects of their trip. Tripit! is a great way to keep organized and make the most of your time while you’re on the road!

Frommer’s Travel Tools
This multifaceted app has a currency converter, time zone equivalency calculator, a tip calculator, a flashlight, a packing list and travel trivia, among other features. It even lets you share virtual postcards featuring photos you took with your iPhone.

TripDoc
A great trip organizer, TripDoc allows you to customize your database for places to visit, eat, stay, etc. TripDoc allows you to add locations to as many cities as you would like. Add locations while you’re online, and access the information via your iPhone even when you’re offline.

HotelsByMe
Need to find a place to stay while you’re on the road? No problem. With HotelsByMe you can search and book over 120,000 hotels worldwide. One can search in multiple currencies and searches return real-time availability, rates and contact information for simple booking.

Trip Journal

The ultimate memory (or bragging) app, Trip Journal allows you to record and share elements of your trip via a variety of sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and email). Geotagging, captions, etc. are all available. This app gets an A+ for its cool vintage aesthetic too.
