While the rest of the country is spending Labor Day in appealing destinations (or the less-than-appealing locale of the airport), you might be stuck at home. If you either can’t travel for Labor Day due to poor planning, a lack of funds or you simply can’t stand the crowds, you can still have a fun filled Labor Day holiday weekend from the comforts of home. Here are a few ideas as to how to spend Labor Day if you can’t hit the road:
Attend a Major or Minor League Baseball Game: Rather than just staying home for Labor Day, there are generally always baseball games taking place on the holiday weekend. Many ballparks even make Labor Day a little more special with fireworks after the game or giveaways. If your Major League team isn’t in town, you can do a quick check to see if Minor League affiliates near you are in town for holiday. You might see a team you haven’t seen before, complete with fireworks after the final strike.
Head For The Nearest State or National Park: Most states are crawling with state parks where you can get out and explore the great outdoors of your home. If you can’t travel for Labor Day, you can always try to seek out a state park at home that you haven’t visited before. You will get to see something new and feel like as though you are traveling, if only just for the day. If you are lucky enough to live near a National Park, Labor Day can provide a good excuse to make the trek to through it.
Play The Part of Tourist in Your Hometown and Go on a Local Tour: Most of us rarely take the tours in our hometowns. Whether it be touring an old mansion or partaking in a chocolate walking tour, Labor Day at home can provide the perfect excuse to play the part of tourist in your own hometown. The long weekend can lend the extra time to get to know part of your home that the tourists always see and the locals seldom do.
Try Preparing a Favorite Meal From Your Travels: One of the many reasons to love travel comes at the table. Food remains a large component of travel, so much so that if you can’t travel for Labor Day, you might feel like you are missing out on some mouth-watering meals. Why not try something a bit different than your standard barbecue? You can take a stab at preparing a favorite meal from your travels for the holiday. It will satisfy that appetite you might have for travel and also help you feel a little bit like you are somewhere else for the holiday weekend.
