Whether you fly into New York City and drive to upstate or score cheap flights directly into Albany, getting to upstate New York is easy.
Once you’re there, there are plenty of things to keep you busy. A refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of New York City, upstate cities and towns are smaller and calmer, but no less interesting.
Here are five places to check out the next time you’re in upstate New York:
Saratoga Springs: The historic city of Saratoga Springs is known for many things, not least of which is it’s impressive horse race track.
The city’s charming main street has a variety of unique art galleries, restaurants, and shops. Take a stroll through the Adelphi Hotel on Broadway— you’ll feel as though you’ve traveled back in time.
Ballston Spa: Ballston Spa is located near Saratoga Springs. Rich in history, it is known for its beautiful Victorian architecture, and the Old Iron Spring, a mineral spring with healing qualities. Stop by the Strolling Village Artisans co-op to find a unique souvenir.
Albany: While in upstate New York, be sure to check out the state’s capitol, Albany. Take a stroll by the capital building, a beautiful example of 19th century architecture. If you’re anywhere near the Empire State Plaza, you won’t be able to miss The Egg, a state-of-the-art performance venue with a unique shape.
Ithaca: Home to Cornell University, the city of Ithaca has a thriving intellectual and cultural scene. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking in the Finger Lakes Region or spending a low-key afternoon at Treman State Park (a great place to take the family).
Saranac Lake: Located in the Adirondacks, the Saranac Lake are has much to offer tourists, including historic towns, arts events, community celebrations, spas/wellness centers and many, many outdoor activities.
