Halloween Takes on Mardi Gras Spirit in New Orleans

This blog post was updated on July 23, 2021.

Though Mardi Gras is still New Orleans’ favorite holiday, it’s clear that Halloween is quickly growing in favor among Big Easy revelers.

Though it’s tough for any day to match the Fat Tuesday celebration in sheer size and fame, Halloween in New Orleans is becoming quite a tradition on its own.

From a huge music festival to dozens of haunted attractions to Mardi Gras-style parades, the holiday has taken on a distinct Big Easy feel in the city.

This year visitors arriving on flights to New Orleans can expect the city to take Halloween to even greater heights. With Halloween falling on a Monday, visitors can expect a full weekend full of spooky activities.

The Voodoo Music Experience, an annual music festival that coincides with Halloween weekend, is expected to draw a crowd of 80,000 from October 28-30.

On the 31st, a huge parade will feature intricate costumes and plenty of beads. Meanwhile, the city will continue to run its famous Haunted New Orleans tours throughout the French Quarter.

Families can join in the celebration with a trip to the Audubon Zoo where Boo at the Zoo events will run on October 21, 22, 28, and 29.
