TSA to Retest Full-Body Scanners for Radiation

This blog post was updated on October 31, 2018.

The Transportation Security Administration announced late last week that it will retest 247 full-body X-ray scanners at 38 airports after maintenance records showed radiation levels 10 times higher than expected.

The TSA said the records reflected mathematical errors made by contracted monitors but will retest every scanner to reassure a weary public of their safety.

The agency expects the new round of testing to be complete by the end of the month.

In response to the supposed monitoring errors, the TSA said it is taking steps to “retrain personnel involved in conducting and overseeing the radiation survey process.”
