I have to admit, when I think of the historically rich and fascinating city of Tel Aviv, kids activities don’t immediately jump to mind. However, as the mother of a traveling toddler, I make it my business to know the most fun and interesting places for kids to go in cities across the globe. I was delighted to learn that Tel Aviv has a plethora of great options for young travelers. Here are four places to check out the next time you’re in this beautiful economic and cultural center.
Explore Ganei Yehoshua (Yarkon Park)
This 10-acre public park adjacent to the Yarkon River is sure to enchant kids and adults alike. Check out the zoo with local fauna or roam the rock and tropical gardens. Older kids will enjoy renting a bike to more easily explore this vast urban green space. Another option is to rent a rowboat or a paddleboat and ride down the Yarkon River. If you get peckish, there are plenty of lovely picnic spots where the kids and run and play to their hearts’ content.
Visit the Isreali Children’s Museum (Holon)
Located in the nearby city of Holon, the Israeli Children’s Museum is not to be missed. As kids move through the museum, they take on the role of a historical character and are invited to interact with the displays and become part of the exhibits. I recommend signing up for a guided tour with a small group (12 or so people) led by a professional guide/actor. The museum is intended for kids ages 3-11.
Relax at Hof Metzitzim Beach
What could be better than a day at a gorgeous beach? Located near the old city port, the family friendly Hof Metzitzim is fully equipped with lifeguards, public restrooms, dressing/changing areas, beach chairs, food stands/restaurants, and a lovely stretch of sand for the kids to frolic. This spot is popular with families, especially in the summer months and can get quite busy in the afternoon. Make sure to stay for the breathtaking sunset.
Experience the Zapari Bird Zoo and Junga Junga (link plays sound)
The 7.5-acre Zapari Bird Zoo is beautifully appointed with tropical vegetation, waterfalls, a swan lake, and, of course, a dazzling array of birds from around the world. Next to Zapari is a Junga Junga, an African-themed park where kids can go on rides, play games, feed and pet animals, and even learn how to bake flatbread.
