Indianapolis Airport to Replace Artwork with Advertisements

This blog post was updated on July 29, 2021.

A decision by Indianapolis International Airport officials to replace a work of art with a digital screen that will display advertisements has some in the art community very upset.

The airport highly touted its $4 million public art collection when it first opened a new passenger terminal back in 2008. However, one of the largest pieces in the collection will now be taken down.

“Chrysalis,” a three-story glass-and-canvas piece from artist James Wille Faust, is set to be removed by the end of August.

The airport rebuffed criticism from artists by saying it is trying to find a balance between showcasing the collection and increasing revenue.

According an airport spokesman, the new screen will alternate advertisements with digital art from local artists.
