5 Smoke-Free U.S. Cities to Visit

As a parent, I appreciate places where I can bring my kid without having to worry about second-hand cigarette smoke. Smoke-free cities have no-smoking laws that apply to restaurants/bars, workplaces, public buildings/grounds and city parks (as well as other areas around the city). The cities on this list also have extensive anti-smoking campaigns, as well as programs to help people stop smoking. Since the Thursday before Thanksgiving happens to be The Great American Smoke-Out, here are five of the most smoke-free U.S. cities to add to your list of places to visit.

Burlington, Vermont
Located on the shore of Lake Champlain, Burlington is not lacking in natural beauty. Many Burlingtonians (and visitors) take advantage of their scenic surroundings and enjoy year-round outdoor sports and recreational activities. Burlington lies just 45 miles from the Canadian border.

San Francisco, California
The vibrant city of San Francisco is unlike any other. In recent decades, it has become a haven for small business, attracting creative and entrepreneurial types from all over the world. San Francisco is known for its diverse culinary and arts scenes as well.

Provo, Utah
The third largest city in the U.S., Provo has also become one of the most technologically advanced. In spring 2013, Provo announced that it would become the second U.S. metropolitan city to have Google Fiber, a state-of-the-art broadband internet service. Provo is also a key operational center for the multinational software and services company, Novell, Inc.

Portland, Oregon
From its historic downtown area to the natural beauty of the rivers and nearby parks, Portland has a lot going for it. Portland is known as the “City of Roses,” because of the many rose parks located throughout the city, mostly notably the International Rose Test Garden.

Durham, North Carolina
Home of the prestigious Duke University, Durham is a historic city with plenty to offer visitors. Durham boasts a diverse local music scene – many jazz, hip-hop, soul, folk, blues, bluegrass, punk, metal and rock artists from Durham go on to become national acts (Iron & Wine, Superchunk, and the Avett Brothers, to name a few).
