New York City’s Coney Island Welcomes First New Roller Coasters Since 1927

This blog post was updated on October 18, 2018.

On Wednesday, New York City’s Coney Island welcomed its first two new roller coasters since The Cyclone first opened back in 1927.

The new coasters highlight The Scream Zone, a new amusement park that is part of an on-going revitalization project for one of New York City’s most famous neighborhoods.

The first phase was completed last summer with the opening of Luna Park which attracted over 450,000 visitors.

Officials are hoping that the new Soarin’ Eagle and Steeplechase roller coasters will draw even bigger crowds this year.

“Last summer was Coney Island’s biggest in nearly a half century, and this year — with the addition of the first new roller coasters since the Cyclone opened in 1927 — it’s going to be even bigger,” declared New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
