London Street Food: Timmy’s Pies

This blog post was updated on October 16, 2018.

A fairly new enterprise, Timmy’s Pies is a West London pie company with a stall at Chelsea Farmers Market every Saturday. Only British, free range meat and game go into their award winning seasonal pies, all wrapped in a light, crispy short crust pastry. Timmy’s Pies was awarded a gold star in the UK’s Great Taste Awards 2011 for Timmy’s chicken, leek and tarragon pie as well as his vegetarian Homity pies. Timmy and Co. offer a range of classic British stalwarts such as beef and red wine and egg and bacon along with a few of their own savoury inventions. Some of Timmy’s more unusual but nevertheless delectable flavours include venison, stout and prune; rabbit, stuffing and beetroot; and wild boar with apple.

And this humble travel blogger is happy to attest that the slow roast pork pie with stuffing and rhubarb is a will winner of a pie! The price for this delectable and meaty fist sized feast is spot on too – £3.50 (that’s about $5.50) for my especially filling and tasty handmade lunch. I dare anyone to find anything even halfway edible for less than five quid in and around upscale Chelsea, one of London’s most expensive quarters.

To be honest, an impressive number of vendors at Chelsea Farmers Market sell modestly priced prepared foods, fresh produce and more at a shopper friendly mark up. So market visitors can enjoy some great street food and save their money for all the fancy shops.

Timmy’s Pies came into existence in the summer of 2010, when Tim Wilkes abandoned an academic career to indulge his passion for making pies. The dude actually has a PhD. He teamed up with Ben Christopherson, a pastry lecturer and ex-chef of esteemed restaurant, The Goring and famed department store Harrods. Together they “set out to push the limits of pie perfection.”

If you can’t manage a Saturday visit to the happening Chelsea Farmers Market, that’s a real shame. Still, there are other opportunities to try Tim and Ben’s pies in London. Timmy’s Pies are available to purchase at Harvey Nichols, WholeFoods and the Peoples’ Supermarket with even more snazzy outlets being lined up.
