Athens, Greece for Kids

This blog post was updated on September 4, 2018.

When I spent time in Athens, Greece in my early twenties, I was captivated by the history and culture of this vibrant city. As it turns out, Athens is just as awe-inspiring for young travelers as well. Here are my top four recommendations for things to do with the kids in Athens.

The Acropolis
Kids of all ages will be impressed by the Acropolis (the most-visited site in Athens). One of the most famous sights in the world, the Acropolis, and the Parthenon in particular, is a symbol of Greek civilization. The Parthenon was dedicated to Athena Parthenos, the goddess of wisdom (who is also the patron goddess of the city of Athens). It was built in the 5th century BC. In 1987, it became a World Heritage Site (UNESCO, 1987). To learn even more about this incredible monument, head to the nearby New Acropolis Museum.

Hellenic World Foundation
This beautiful museum of Greek history and culture is geared towards kids (but will enchant adults, too). In the exhibition hall, major periods and themes in Greek history are presented using cutting-edge multimedia technology. Its a great place to spend an afternoon!

The Athens Planetarium
Once the kids have had their fill of ancient ruins and history, treat them to a trip to the Athens planetarium (hailed as one of the best in the world).  Visit the website to plan your visit. The Athens Planetarium is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, so I would suggest purchasing tickets for shows ahead of time.

Antonis Tritsis Environmental Park
After you finish your sightseeing in the city center, head to the nearby “A. Tritsis” Environmental Education & Sensitization Park, which occupies 900 acres and serves as a wildlife refuge. Take a walk along the outdoor pathways that meander around lakes and through wooded areas. Be on the lookout for a variety of animals, including rare birds. Be sure to stop by the exhibition room where you can learn about various habitats and endangered species.

Enjoy experiencing Athens through the eyes of a child!
