Late pop art icon Andy Warhol will be honored with not one but two exhibitions opening in Washington DC today.
On Sunday, the National Gallery of Art will open “Warhol: Headlines,” an exhibition focusing on the artist’s obsession with tabloid sensationalism and news consumption.
The eighty piece exhibition explores Warhol’s take on the media’s take on major news stories like the Kennedy assassination and the exploits of starlet Elizabeth Taylor.
Meanwhile, “Shadows” at the nearby Hirshhorn museum brings together 102 silkscreened and hand-painted canvases from Warhol, the first time the entire exhibition will be shown together as intended.
An estimated 40 percent of the works have never been viewed by the public. “Headlines” will run through January 2 while “Shadows” will stick around until January 14.
