One of my passions is interior design, so I like to seek out stores that will inform and inspire my aesthetic, especially when I travel to a different city. Of course, New York has a wealth of these types of boutiques. Here are four fantastic New York interior design shops – all very different from one another – that I recommend.
ABC Carpet and Home
888-881 Broadway New York, NY 10003
ABC is a staple in the New York design scene. With locations in Manhattan and the Bronx, this expertly curated shop carries everything from over-dyed Persian rugs to mod chandeliers to children’s books. ABC manages to strike that fine balance between playful, current and classic. I can always count on ABC to provide quality products in a variety of price points. Each of the retail spaces is so well designed that I wouldn’t mind just moving in and staying for a while.
Roche Bobois
200 Madison Avenue New York, NY 10018
A renowned international brand, Roche Bobois carries European furniture by a variety of top-notch designers. They’ve grouped the brands they offer by aesthetic – the “Les Contemporains” collection features avant-garde designs and the “Nouveaux Classiques” collection contains more timeless, versatile pieces. The Madison Avenue showroom is a truly stunning space.
Marimekko
200 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10011
The classic Finnish brand Marimekko’s Flatiron shop is a feast for the eyes. Choose from colorful serving wear, bags, umbrellas, and a variety of products (tablecloths, comforters, pillows, etc.) made from the brand’s famous graphic textiles. (A cute new tablecloth makes a perfectly packable souvenir!)
Adelaide
702 Greenwich Street, New York, NY 10014
The first time I visited Adelaide, I was convinced I was in heaven. This beautifully arranged shop carries art deco and modernist furniture, as well as a variety of home accessories – rare antique and vintage pieces from the 1930s-1960s. The selection is constantly changing, and the pieces are always in excellent taste.
