Taos is in the north central region of the of the US state of New Mexico. The town is surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and is in proximity to Taos Pueblo, which is a Native American village. Located at the base of the tallest peaks in the country, Taos is a friendly little town famed as an artist's colony and a hub for outdoor activities. Here visitors can enjoy anything from hot-air ballooning and river rafting to visiting impressive museums to art galleries. In addition, there are lots of other things to do in the city, including fishing, skiing, hiking, and savoring food at the excellent restaurants.
Taos Pueblo
Located on the northern edge of the city, Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark. It is a Native American community comprising impressive multi-storied adobe buildings set against stunning backdrop of forested and snow-laden peaks. Visitors here can also enjoy public dances at various times in a year. Tourists can also see and buy locally produced arts and crafts especially jewelry.
El Rio Grande del Norte National Monument
Located north from Taos all the way to the Colorado border, El Rio Grande del Norte National Monument encompasses around 250,000 acres of public land. The monument covers an immense range of ecosystems from sage-dominated range and wide-open grasslands to the alpine slopes of Ute Mountain and depths of the Rio Grande Gorge. El Rio Grande del Norte National Monument offers an assortment of outdoor recreational activities including hiking, rafting, hunting, camping, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing.
Harwood Museum of Art
An excellent place to visit for art lovers, Harwood Museum of Art is located on historic Ledoux Street and boasts a wide-ranging and impressive assortment of art from southern Colorado and northern New Mexico including works from Hispanic, Native American, and Anglo-American settlers and artists. The major highlights at the museum are 20,000 photographic images dating to the 19th century and the assortment of sacred carved figures known as "Santos."
