Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
A masterpiece of early 19th century neoclassical architecture, the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is the seat of the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mobile. It is named after Mary, mother of Jesus. You should visit it for its 12 magnificent stained glass windows, equally distributed on north and south sides. These windows were made in Germany in 1890 and were installed in phases until 1910.
Battleship Memorial Park
Battleship Memorial Park is home to an iconic duo of a battleship (USS Alabama) and a submarine (USS Drum) that had served the nation during the Second World War. It has a large collection of military aircraft and other related equipments. Also comes highly recommended is a trip inside USS Alabama, it has an enthralling view of the main gun turrets that had once fired their might against the Axis Powers during the war.
Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras in Mobile is the oldest annual Carnival celebration in the United States, started in 1703. The festival is celebrated in February or March but the city starts preparing for it in November with a number of ball dances and concludes with masquerading parades in early January. You are recommended to witness how local mystic societies carry out colorful processions throughout downtown. You can even get a gift from the masked members while they are throwing souvenirs at the spectators!
