A city in the US state of Alaska, McGrath is located on the south bank of the Kuskowim River. This city sits equidistance from Fairbanks and Anchorage and enjoys a serene, wilderness lifestyle with infrequent bursts of activities, held especially during winters. McGrath organizes Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Rage every March. It is one of the most popular sporting events in Alaska where more than 50 mushers race 16 dog teams along the 1100 miles of route to Nome from Wasilla. This trail is also the track used for renowned Iditarod Trail Invitational and Iron Dog snowmobile race. Iditarod Trail Invitational is a human-powered race ending at McGrath and has been famous as "toughest winter endurance race in the world". During summer, visitors can explore Innoko National Wildlife Refuge as McGrath is an access point to the southern unit of the refuge.
Innoko National Wildlife RefugeAccessible from McGrath by air, Innoko National Wildlife Refuge is a national wildlife refuge located in western Alaska. It is the fifth largest national wildlife refuge in the country. The topography of the refuge is swampy and is nestling area for birds including red-tailed hawks, ospreys, bald eagles, northern hawk-owls, common ravens, trumpeter swans, short-eared owls, and many more. Mammalian species that reside this refuge are wolf, brown and black bears, mink, Alaskan moose, Canadian lynx, porcupine, marten, river otter, beaver, wolverine, red fox, and muskrat.
Kuskokwim RiverA 702-mile long river flowing in the Southwest Alaska, Kuskokwim River is the ninth largest river in the United States of America. In addition, it is the longest free flowing river in the country. Visitors can enjoy boating in this lovely river.
