The eleventh largest sovereign state in Africa, Mauritania is bordered by Western Sahara to the north and northwest, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Mali to the east and southeast, Algeria to the northeast, and Senegal to the southwest. The country stems its nomenclature from the prehistoric Berber kingdom of Mauretania, which ruled the region from the 3rd century BCE to the 7th century CE. Most of the Mauritania's land falls within Sahara; and therefore, a large part of its population is concentrated in the south. Nouakchott is the capital and largest city of Mauritania and is located on the Atlantic coast.
