Jackson is the capital city, primary seat of Hinds County and largest urban center of Mississippi in United States. It is scenically situated on the Pearl River and is named after the former US President, General Andrew Jackson. The city is best noted for its role in the Civil Rights Movement and some top-of-the-line museums depicting the indomitable aura of Afro-American struggle over the last century. It is replete with a number of old houses that were built by black slaves. Also of note are nearly 25 superb attractions consisting of museums and allied attractions related to history, music, arts and sports. The city is also blessed with an extensive music scene and you can always attend live music shows here every weekend.
Old Mississippi State CapitolThe Old Mississippi State Capitol has served as the Mississippi statehouse from 1839 until 1903. Some of the most momentous ordinances in the history of the United States like Passage of the Ordinance of Secession (1861), Constitutional Convention recognizing African American political rights (1868) and Restoration of White Rule (1875) were passed here. A New Capitol was built in 1903 and the older structure was subsequently turned into a historical museum.
Mississippi Museum of Natural ScienceMississippi ‘s largest museum, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is home to more than a million specimens of fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, invertebrates, plants, and fossils native to the state. It has a dedicated display of aquariums, habitat exhibits and nature trails specializing in native flora and fauna, central to which are numerous species of aquatic fish and mollusks.
Medgar Evers Home MuseumMedgar Wiley Evers (July 2, 1925 - June 12, 1963) was a former Second World War veteran and a prominent figure of Afro-American Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi. He was assassinated in Jackson near his home, and the place (the site of his assassination and some nearby houses) was turned into a house museum called the Medgar Evers Home Museum. It contains period furnishings, exhibits and Medgar’s personal photographs.
