The American city of Fayetteville is the third-largest in Arkansas state and county seat of Washington County. It is located in the Ozark Mountains at the outskirts of the Boston Mountains, and is known for its hiking, backpacking and mountain bike trails. It has hosted a crucial battle during the Civil War in 1862-63 and is home to the University of Arkansas (established in 1871). Some highlights here include the Fayetteville Historic Square (it contains the oldest structures of the city dating back to 1829), Dickson Street (the most famous entertainment district in Arkansas), the Arkansas Air Museum (it has a superb collection of racing planes from 1920-30) and Devil’s Den State Park (a year-round hotspot for hiking, mountain bike and equestrian trails).
Fayetteville Historic SquareThe Fayetteville Historic Square is the geographic and cultural centre of the city since 1829 AD. Lined-up with scenic sidewalks and landscaped gardens, it is home to a number of 19th and 20th century buildings like the original Fayetteville Post Office, the Old Bank of Fayetteville Building and the Guisinger Building. You should visit here for cultural events like the First Thursday on the Square, the Block Street Block Party, Lights of the Ozarks Festival, Last Night Fayetteville and Fayetteville Farmer's Market.
Arkansas Air and Military MuseumThe Arkansas Air and Military Museum contains a top-of-the-line collection of various military vehicles, aircraft, and artifacts related to Fayetteville's aviation history and the Golden Age of Air Racing (1918-39 AD). Some of the famous aircraft depicted here include a First World War fighter plane, Vietnam-era Army helicopters, a Navy carrier fighter and the sleek ‘Mystery Ship’ (the winner of the 1929 National Air Race).
Devil's Den State ParkDevil's Den State Park is situated 25 miles from Fayetteville, near West Fork. This state park is where you should go for hiking, backpacking, mountain bike trails or simply picnicking in backcountry areas of the city and the nearby Ozark National Forest. It has 144 campsites, a group camp, a standard pavilion several fully-equipped cabins with kitchens and fireplaces that are open throughout the year.
