Des Moines is the capital and county seat of Polk County in Iowa, US. It is one of the mainstays of American insurance industry, financial services and publishing houses. This beautiful capital city, which was thrice ravaged by floods during 150 years, also hosts the preliminary rounds of political campaigning during American elections every five years. You should visit it for its stellar lineup of classic Victorian buildings and gardens, in addition to its three of its signature offerings- Iowa State Fair, Des Moines Arts Festival and the 80/35 Music Festival. Also of note are its host of allied cultural festivals, superb art museums and botanical gardens.
Lowa Capitol BuildingOne of the best American state capitols to tour, the 19th century Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines is hallmarked by a sparkling 23-karat gold leaf dome and four surrounding smaller copper-topped domes. Its interiors have a superb collection of Civil War and First World War relics in addition to several allied artworks, carvings and statues. This Renaissance masterpiece is flanked by some iconic monuments and memorials including the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument and the Lincoln and Tad statue.
Lowa State FairgroundsThe Iowa State Fair is organized in August every year in Des Moines. This eleven day wonder colors the city in a rousing ambiance relating to regional agriculture, visual arts and culinary practices. Attended by over a million visitors, it is one of the largest state fairs in the country and is rendered to its crowning glory Iowa’s largest parade and several concerts and entertainment shows by Hollywood celebrities.
Blank Park ZooThe Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines is home to a several native and exotic animal species like giraffes, sea lions, ostriches, emus, sloths, seals etc. Other stellar attractions here include an extensive aviary, aquarium and an exhibit containing numerous reptiles and nocturnal animals. Other attractions include special events like the ‘Behind the Scenes’ tours and ‘Feed the Giraffes’ and ‘Zoo Brew’ that are held at preset times of the year.
