West Virginia is a state in the United States and its capital city is Charleston. It is regarded as the ‘Mountain State’ because it is the only state in America to lie completely inside a mountain range (the Appalachians). It is bordered by Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky. You would find it an endearing sum of natural beauty delicately balanced by old mountain towns, traditional handicrafts, a host of Pioneer and Civil War history, immersive cultural events and outdoor recreation activities (like fishing, hiking, biking, camping, windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving). West Virginia would best serve those sedate souls who are looking for a quiet, mountainside getaway this weekend, far removed from noise and disturbance.

New River Gorge Bridge

The New River Gorge Bridge is a 3030 feet long steel arch bridge over the New River Gorge near Fayetteville in West Virginia, in the Appalachian Mountains. Due to its 1700 feet long arch, it was the world's longest single-span arch bridge for quite a few years after its completion in 1977- though it has now slumped to third position overall. It is still one of the world’s highest vehicular bridges and is the centerpiece of a local cultural event called Bridge Day’ that is celebrated on the third Saturday of every October.

Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry is where a daring raid was executed by some hostile forces in 1859, an event that literally triggered the Civil War. Today the significance of that event is epitomized in and as a national historic park (called Harpers Ferry National Park) that is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in Harpers Ferry in West Virginia. This park is now home to several museums and offers recreational opportunities like fishing, boating, hiking and whitewater rafting.

Blackwater Falls State Park

Known for its picture-perfect beauty and a natural Blackwater Falls State Park in the Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County, West Virginia derives its name from the falls of the Blackwater River. The river’s amber-colored waters plunge to 60 feet on sandstone ridges and continue their path swirling through an eight-mile long gorge near Davis. The water here is of black color due to the tannic acid that falls from hemlock and red spruce trees nearby.
