Shri Harmindir Sahib or the Golden Temple
Located in the city of Amritsar, the Golden Temple is the holiest Gurdwara of Sikhism and is home to the Akal Takht (the Throne of the Eternal God) and the Adi Granth (the most religious scripture of Sikhism). It was built by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das with a view to promote an equalitarian place of worship where everyone regardless of his religion or social status could worship God. The Harmandir Sahab has four entrances to signify the non-sectarian universality of Sikhism. The temple complex is open for 20 hours a day from six in the morning to 2 in the night. The temple and its golden top are beautifully lit up every night.
Jallianwala Bagh
A visit to Amritsar is never complete without a visit to the Jallianwala Bagh where a massacre had taken place on the festive morning of Baisakhi on 13th April 1919. This ghastly act against humanity was committed by British General Dyer who had ordered indiscriminate firing at an unarmed and festive crowd, thereby leading to the death of 1579 people in ten minutes. This park is walled on all sides with five entrances and the bullets were directed on the gates that lead to the maximum loss of life. The bullet holes are still visible on the walls here. There is also a well in the park where people had jumped to save themselves from hailing bullets and got drowned in the process.
