Kek Lok Si-Temple of Supreme Bliss
Located in Penang, the Kek Lok Si-Temple of Supreme Bliss is regarded as the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. It is located at the base of the Air Itam Mountain on Penang Island in the Malaysian state of Penang. Kek Lok Si-Temple is best known for a seven-storey Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas that is home to 10000 statues of Lord Buddha. Another attraction here is a mini-funicular train that runs all the way up to hilltop where a 36.5 meter high bronze statue of Kuan Yin (the Goddess of Mercy) is located. It is best to visit this place during the Chinese New Year when the temple is decorated with colorful lanterns and lights.
Bukit Bendera (or Penang Hill)
Penang Hill is a hill resort on Penang Island in Malaysia. It comprise of several hills, the highest of them is the 2733 feet high Western Hill. This hill used to serve as a summer vacation destination for the British officers during 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors can reach Penang Hill by Malaysia’s only operational funicular railway called the Penang Hill Railway. An impossible to miss attraction here is Curtis Crest; a popular eco-tourism hotspot located on the outskirts of a 130-million year old virgin rainforest on Penang Hill and is focally known for its nature trail, canopy walkways, and zip lines.
Snake Temple
Snake Temple in Penang was built in honor of Chinese monk Chor Soo Kong in 1850 AD. Common folklore assumes that the saint was a healer and he used to protect the snakes from nearby forest. After Soo Kong died, the local inhabitants erected the temple in his memory but soon enough it was filled with a lot of snakes and this sight hasn’t changed ever since. Visitors can also visit a snake museum near the temple that is home to a lot more snakes.
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is located in George Town, the state capital of Penang. It is a museum dedicated to the traditional Penang's Peranakan heritage and is housed inside a green-colored mansion that served as the residence of a 19th century Chinese business tycoon, Chung Keng Quee. The late 19th century Pinang Peranakan Mansion is home to thousands of Peranakan artifacts, antiques and collectibles. Also of note here are its English floor tiles, Chinese carved-wood panels and Scottish ironworks.
