Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe, is the historic district of Panama City. It was built as a walled city on a peninsula a few kilometers away from Panama Viejo to protect its settlers against future pirate attacks. It was constructed after the destruction of the old city in 1671. In the year 1997, Casco Viejo was declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The streets are filled with buildings that served as homes, cathedrals and churches and government buildings over centuries and many architectural phases. Some of these structures have been painstakingly restored and now house museums, gourmet restaurants, quaint shops and upscale residences. Isla Taboga is an ideal escape from the hustle-bustle of the city. It is situated at a distance of around 20 kilometers from Panama City. Located here is a beautiful village which is home to the second-oldest church in the western hemisphere. National Theatre of Panama

The National Theatre of Panama is situated within the old city of Panama. It lies next to the church of San Francisco & the Plaza Bolivar. Setup in the year 1908, the theater was designed by Italian architect Genaro Ruggieri. The theater has been built on the site of an 18th century monastery. The theatre is part of a cross-shaped building. Some of the note worthy features of the theater includes frescos by Roberto Lewis (a renowned painter of Panama), impressive crystal chandelier, & red and gold decorations.
