Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves, located on the Elephanta Island (Gharapuri, meaning the city of caves), are a vast network of sculpted caves. The Elephanta Island lies at a distance of nearly 10 kilometres from the city in Mumbai Harbour. There are two groups of caves, large and small. The large group comprises five Hindu Caves and the smaller group consists of two Buddhist Caves. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Hindu Caves have rock cut stone sculptures dating back to 5th and 8th century. Until the beginning of Portuguese rule, the Great Cave (Cave 1 or Main Cave) was a place of worship for Hindus. To preserve the art work, the caves were declared World Heritage Site in the year 1987.
