Doha Corniche
Doha’s landmark feature, Doha Corniche, is a 4.3 miles long waterfront boardwalk along Doha Bay. It is earmarked by the Corniche Street that connects the city’s business areas and Doha International Airport. Doha Cornice marks the rapid evolution of the city from a nondescript desert city of the 1950s to one gleaming and bubbling with skyscrapers and glamour ever since the oil boom of 1970s. Doha Corniche also assumes a pivotal position in furthering the country’s tourism. Some popular attractions here include the Museum of Islamic Art, the pyramid shaped Sheraton Hotel and one of the city’s oldest bird-watching sites - the Al Rumaila Park.
Museum of Islamic Art
The Museum of Islamic Art is the numero uno attraction along the Doha Corniche. It is built on an island built over an exclusively designed artificial peninsula serving Doha Bay. The Museum of Islamic Art and architecture is the first museum to showcase 1400 years of Islamic art in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. The museum can quickly daze a visitor with its top notch collection of metal work, ceramics, jewelry, wood work, textiles and glass works.
Souq Waqif
The Arabic terms Souq Waqif implies ‘the Standing Market’ in English. This vibrant marketplace is the go to place to purchase garments, spices, handicrafts, souvenirs and even birds. This one-hundred year old marketplace was renovated in traditional Islamic architectural style in 2008 to mend its soiled appearance and to give its appearance a much-needed facelift to propel its booming businesses. Visitors often remark that Souq Waqif is one of the select few in Middle East that still have an authentic feel in its business, architecture and culture even in the 21st century.
Katara
Doha was formerly called Katara until 18th century. It now signifies a cultural village in Doha, Qatar. It consists of an open (or Roman style) public auditorium, some museums, galleries, libraries and restaurants. Katara opened its eyes to the world during the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 and has been hosting that event ever since. Some popular attractions in Katara are Fath Al Kheir journey (a small sea-faring voyage to promote Qatar's maritime heritage), and QMA Gallery (it is a famous public art venue in the city). Katara also earned worldwide acclaim after hosting Giuseppe Verdi's classic opera Aida. It was the first opera event held in Qatar and involved more than 80 singers and 35 actors.
